Analysis Of The Book The Year 1984 - 1544 Words

Part A– Summary In the year 1984, a 39 year old man named Winston lived in a totalitarian society set in in the nation of Oceania, in London, England. All of the people who live in the â€Å"Outer Party† were monitored via telescreens and were forced to believe whatever the ruling head Big Brother said. The history books were rewritten constantly to suite Big Brother. Unhappy with the society which he lives in, Winston decides to take the risk of writing a diary to assert his independence and protest against Big Brother, even though he knows this could mean death if anyone discovered it. Winston and his girlfriend, Julia confide in Mr. O’Brien, a member of the Inner Party and they both share mutual feelings in regards to Big Brother. Little does Winston know that O’Brien is a spy who reveals Winston to Big Brother and he and Julia are tortured until they share the same linear way of thinking as the majority of society and or forced to believe that indeed 2+2 does equal 5 and th ey â€Å"loved† Big Brother too. Culture Weston Smith (2013), former CFO of HealthSouth, states â€Å"the tone of the company may be memorialized through policies and procedures, both written and spoken, but nothing sets the tone more than the everyday actions of the leadership.† At the top of the HealthSouth organization sat Richard Scrushy. As founder and CEO of the company who instilled fear in employees that did not carry out his orders. This set the tone from the top. Do as you’re told or suffer the consequences. When financial results did not meet market expectations, managers were told to fix it. And they did by creating false journal entries and false documentation to back up those entries. There were no checks and balances in place and the accounting system was not linked to the enterprise resource planning software. There was no oversight of managers by a board of directors or an audit committee. The audit committee was not well trained, did not have enough staff, and was not independent of management. Scrushy had complete control of the company and he was obsessed with increasing his earnings trends. He reinforced the idea of top management being family and therefore more loyal to each other than to the unknown public (Lupica, 2014). Impact on Company Management Due to the scandal, 15 HealthSouth executives plead guilty to criminal charges. I scooted the bowl away. Seth started to get up, but I shooed him back down. â€Å"Nope. Not finished.† I reached for a bottle of massage oil I’d brought and poured some on my hands. It smelled like almonds. â€Å"That was just to get you clean.† With as much deliberation as I’d performed the washing, I massaged the oil into his skin, starting with his feet once again. Washing can be sensual, but rubbing someone with oil is doubly so. Triple, even. The light banter faded between us. Seth simply watched, wonder and arousal on his face as I worked my way up. And as I met his gaze, I saw more than just those feelings. The love in his eyes was so powerful, I needed to look away. Seth had an amazing grasp of the English language, but there were days when that skill was nothing compared to what he told me in his looks. When I finished his legs, I climbed up behind him on the couch and worked on his back and chest too. I’d been giving massages almost as long as I’d been dancing. I knew exactly what to do, knew where all the muscle groups were and how to unkink them. Seth had a lot of stiffness and knots in his back, either from bad laptop posture or stress. Maybe both. At last, the job was complete. Heedless of oil on me or the couch, he leaned back and pulled me to his chest. My cheek rested on his smooth, slick skin, and the scent of almond and Seth enveloped me. â€Å"Ah, Georgina,† he sighed. â€Å"I wish I could return that.† â€Å"I’ll just pretend you did.† He sighed again. â€Å"I hate the pretending.† â€Å"Yeah.† â€Å"I mean it. Really hate it.† The vehemence in his voice startled me. You perform all the time for me†¦but what do you get? You must be the one who’s sexually frustrated. The stuff you do on the side†¦well, that doesn’t matter. Sometimes I think Hugh was right. I want to be with you†¦Ã¢â‚¬  He ran a hand through my hair, tangling it in his fingers. â€Å"But not if it’s going to do more harm than good. I don’t want you to hurt. I don’t want you to spend the rest of my life worrying about my body and my soul. I don’t want you to cry when I’m gone.† A lump formed in my throat, and I thought I might actually start crying then and there. There was something in his voice, a strange and ominous note that scared me for reasons I couldn’t entirely explain. I dug my fingers into his skin and pressed myself closer to him. â€Å"No more,† I whispered. â€Å"I don’t want to talk about this anymore. It isn’t relevant.† Seth tightened his grip on me and didn’t respond. We went to bed after that, speaking little. He snuggled against me, resting his head on my chest. I ran my fingers through his hair, taking in his scent and his feel. As he slipped into sleep, I thought about what he’d said about what puts meaning into life. I thought about wanting and needing. And what I needed right then was energy. Tawny’d wiped me out, and there was no way I was going to start shifting back to the body I’d been born with. Still touching Seth’s hair, I thought how easy it would be to just lean down and kiss him. Really kiss him. And kiss him and kiss him†¦ Wanting and needing. Regretfully, I slipped out of bed. Seth was a heavy sleeper and simply rolled to his side, never coming close to waking. With a wistful look, I left the condo and used my last bit of energy to put on a different shape. Finding a victim wasn’t hard – further reinforcing how absurd the whole Tawny thing was – and in less than two hours, I was back in bed with Seth and recharged. He is a canonized saint of the CatholicChurch and was made a Doctor of the Church because of his extreme influence onpresent day doctrine. His dedication as a leader in service is surpassed only byhis deep faith in the workings of the Trinity through Jesus on earth as a modeland the Holy Spirit as our guide to a life of spirituality. John of the Crosswas born Juan de Yepes in 1542 to a poor family of Spanish nobility. When Johnwas a boy, he attended a school for poor children, gaining a basic education,and the opportunity to learn skills from local craftsmen. When he was 17, Johnbegan to work at the Plague Hospital de la Concepcion, and its founder offeredto let him attend the Jesuit College, so long as he did not neglect his hospitalduties. From 1559 to 1563, John studied with the Jesuits, learning Latin, Greek,and other subjects. He was offered the chance to study for the secularpriesthood, which would have given him material security, but he felt God wascalling him to Religious life. At age 20, he entered the Carmelite Order, beingclothed with the habit on February 24, 1563, and taking the name Juan de SantoMatia (John of Saint Matthias). He was ordained in 1567, and said his first Massin Medina del Campo. During that trip, he first met Teresa of Avila, and sheencouraged him to promote her reform among the mens Order. John spent much ofhis time working for the reformation of the Carmelite Order and in the overallservice of others. However, there were said problems with his ideas of reformfrom certain members of his Order. On the night of December 2, 1577, a group ofC armelites, lay people, and men-at-arms broke into Johns quarters, seizedhim, and took him away. The men led John away, handcuffed, and blindfolded, to amonastery in Toledo. John stood accused of being rebellious and as an overallthreat to the Order. John would have to submit to the demands of the Order, orundergo severe punishment. Nonetheless, John refused to renounce the reform inwhich he so truly had faith. John was locked up in the monastery prison becauseof his strong convictions toward reform. He was placed in a windowless dark roomof six by ten feet, with little light, and with little air. This hole of a cellwas exposed to the terribly cold winter months and the suffocating heat of thesummer months. This, aside for the beatings, the filth, the forced fasting, andthe lice, made it an unfavorable situation for anyone. However, John did not seethe situation as the rest of humanity would see it. John found the situation tobe a blessing because he was able to remove all of his ear thly needs anddesires, and find the true place where God was hidden. God brought John hisgreatest joys in those times of pain and suffering. In a sense, the oppressorswhom imprisoned John, gave him what he truly wanted. God. In time, John was ableto escape the prison cell in which he was held by physically unscrewing thebolts on his door. Thought to be achieved miraculously by some, John was able tocreep past the guards, climb down the wall, and regain his freedom. From thetime of his escape until the time of his death, John devoted his life to thesharing and explaining of his experience of the Lords grace and love. Saint John of the Cross, in the darkness of your worst moments, when youwere alone and persecuted, you found God. Help me to have faith that God isthere especially in the times when God seems absent and far away. Amen.After his time in the monastery prison and his eventual escape, John was able toagain take up his mission of reform far away from the conflicts and threats thatimpeded him prior. He never cared to go over the past and talk about hisimprisonment. He bore no animosity toward his oppressors; nor did he complain orboast about the suffering that he had endured. Because of his experience, Johnwas now more than ever before, able to appreciate the natural world around him. John was now able to listen to all of nature through his senses; the flowers,the whistling breezes, the night, the dawn; all were manifestations of the Lord. This seemed to be one of Johns only vices, if it could fairly be called that. John could not easily resist the enchantment of nature. John was ver much human. The rushing streams, the flowers in the field, the vast mountains, and all ofnature spoke to him. God was present everywhere. Come and see these littlecreatures of God. How well they worship the Almighty! John found itimpossible to ignore any person of the world who was in personal distress. However, John did not limit himself to only assisting others who were seekingspiritual enlightenment, but he looked for ways to help those with materialneeds as well. John was a selfless man who lived for the service of others. There were countless examples and stories of how John would go to great lengthsto help out his fellow man in the least. Further, this lifestyle of service didnot end at the material needs of others, but transmitted in the physical needsof the sick. Taking pains to show the most delicate sympathy for the sick, heknew how to care for them, comfort them, and give them hope. He would not allowthe question of money to interfere with his desire to give his sick friars thebest possible care. He was a true leader in service. It was out of thispoverty and suffering, that John learned to search for beauty and happiness notin the world, but in God. But Johns deepest concern was for thosepersons who were suffering in their spiritual life. In his oral teachings, Johnused to point out that the more you love God, the more you grow spiritually. Further, the growth that he desired was to include all people and help themachieve that spiritual understanding. In his spiritual direction of others, Johnfocused on the communion with God in faith, hope, and love. Ultimately, the wayto truly receive that spiritual life was to follow those teachings of faith,hope, and love as Christ did. Pain for John was not a misfortune but a valuewhen suffered with and for Christ. John recognized that we could not understandthe truth of Christ without the Holy Spirit, the basis of our personalspirituality. He wanted everyone to find comfort in the thought that howeversevere it may be, purification is still the work of Gods gentle hand, clearingaway the debris of attachment and making room for the divine light. Hardphysical labor in the service of others attracted him because he knew howimportant it was for him to achieve that true spiritual awareness. John did whatneeded to be done. What more do you want, o soul! And what else do yousearch for out side, when within yourself you possess your riches, delights,satisfaction and Kingdom your Beloved whom you desire and seek? Desire Himthere, adore Him there; Do not go in pursuit of Him outside yourself. You willonly become distracted and you wont find Him, or enjoy Him more than by seekingHim within you. One of the main sources that gave John of the Cross hisgreat inspiration was the Bible. The Bible, which he cherished most of allworldly objects, helped him understand the mystery of the three Persons of theTrinity. This further understanding of the Trinity allowed John to help himselfand encourage others to achieve such a level of enlightenment. As stated prior,John spent his entire life in the service of others and sought to spread thatcherished understanding in which he received through his personal pains andsuffering. This spiritual journey was and is for every person. For John, theBible served as a living and unfailing wellspring. Its waters pervade the entirebeing of this m ystical thinker, poet, and writer. The Bible was his hymnal, hismeditation book, a book for travel, for contemplation, and for writing. John of theCross was a very influential individual in the Catholic Church who furtherextended the lifestyle of service in which Christ instilled. Although mostpeople would gather that John might have been angered or disillusioned by hisimprisonment, persecution, and suffering throughout his life, rather Johnsreaction was quite the opposite. These painful events in his life transformedhim into a man of charity who held a deep compassion for those who suffered. John saw a clear vision of the beauty of Gods creation and its intimacy withthe Blessed Trinity. Through suffering like Christ suffered, John was able toachieve that spiritual enlightenment. John fell ill at the end of his life in avery small village on a service trip to Mexico. John died as he had prayed forthroughout his ministry of service: without honors, without material comfort,and with great suffering. Conflicts in Healthcare Organisations CONFLICT AND TEAM EFFECTIVENESS INTRODUCTION (SCENARIO) LOCATION :- MIDDLEMORE HOSPITAL Middlemore is a tertiary public care hospital which is managed by Counties Manukau Health Board. It provides several kinds of health and social care services. It is 800 bedded hospital with 24 operation theatres. In the hospital different kinds of departments are present. Around 4700 staff members providing their services in all departments. All the staff members are working as a great team. All the departments are interconnected with each other as all are depend on another departments services e.g. doctor always need help of nursing staff for providing care to the patients as well as radiology, laboratory and physiotherapy departments are also connected in all care facilities which are providing by the hospital. Sometimes team work get affected due to some issues in any workplace which affects on quality of care and on working environment as well. CONFLICT :- It is the major problem in any workplace which occur in two or more persons. Conflicts in healthcare organisations definitely affect patient care and productivity. It is necessary task for a team leader to identify the reason behind that conflict and to figure out a solution to avoid major consequences in the future. (Ramsey, M. 2001 April). Rate of happening conflicts in healthcare profession is higher instead of any other profession. (Barr Dowding, 2016). Our report is on a conflict which occur between two nurses. In the next paragraphs, I am going to submit a report on the whole problem as well as its outcomes. THE SCENARIO Conflict starts between day and night staff nurses Lisa (New Zealand resident working since last 2 years) and Tina (newly joined nurse from India) Tina (day staff) was more sincere and experienced than Lisa (night staff). Soon Tina built good IPR (Inter-personal Relationship) with all the staff members as well as doctors. She got some rewards from management because of her caring nature and working skills. On the other hand, Lisa was not good at her work as Tina was, sometimes she behave rudely with the patients. Lisa starts jealousy from Tina because of her respect in the staff and doctors. She always think Tina to make insulted from management and doctors. One night in the shift of Lisa a surgery planned by doctor for next morning but in the next morning while giving charge to Tina she hide the information about surgery and to keep the patient NPO (nil per orally) as ordered by the doctor. Moreover, she did not show the patients record to Tina in which the surgery was mentioned by the doctor. Tina serve breakfast to patient because she was unknown about the surgery. In the morning doctor came to visit the patient and asked to Tina is patient ready for operation theatre. She got shocked and said that I did not know about surgery, I gave breakfast to the patient. Doctor starts shouting to Tina. She explain that night staff did not tell anything to me about the surgery because it was planned in the night and I was just going to check the patients record than breakfast came and I serve it to patient. The doctor call the incharge nurse (Rosy) explain about the issue. Incharge feel sorry for this troublesomeness and disobliging work as well as for major issue created by her team. RESONS FOR CONFLICT Jealousy Communication gap Racism Competition Misunderstanding Disrespecting behaviour FACTORS AFFECTING WORKPLACE Conflict between Lisa and Tina increases day by day because of Lisas misunderstanding. Many times, it was noticed by incharge also and she warned Lisa several times, but the problem still exist. But today major issue was occur due to misunderstanding and communication gap between her team. These conflicts were going to affect the whole organisation which was not good for patient and the other staff members as well the organisation. Because the workplace environment influence staff satisfaction which is directly co-related to the organisation working environment that affect patient care. LACK OF COMMUNICATION When misunderstandings occur team members starts ignoring one another instructions and sometimes rules of organisation as well which definitely decreases the quality of care. STRESS AND JOB BURNOUT Lack of co-workers co-operation and communication leads to stress which decreases working power resulting in job burnout. EMPLOYMENT INSECURITY With the joining of new staff insecurity in the existing staff leads to stress and negative workplace environment. TEAM ERRORS Team is the first thing which is disturbed with these kinds of errors and misunderstandings. If the team will not work with co-operation, then many more problems are there to occur. So, incharge decided to discuss the problem with manager and to clear the misunderstandings of Lisa about Tina. She goes to manager and discuss about the problem and they planned about a team building day which will give time to all the staff members to communicate with each other and give some time to spend without any work load. They planned about some games and activities which were beneficial for a good team work and effectiveness of team. They choose many activities. ACTIVITIES FOR TEAM EFFECTIVENESS Team members chose some activities for team effectiveness in which all the group members were participated and they get time to introduce with each other and to understand each others behaviour very closely. On the very first stage there was confusion with some team members by doing activities together they form trust on each other and get close, all team members were clear about their roles and objectives which are mainly helpful on their workplace. Some of the team activities which were done on team building day are: BLIND FOLDES NEWS HEADINGSA MINEHUNT HUMAN KNOT BALANCING STICK AIRLOCK TEAM BUILDING All activities were helpful for building a great team but we select airlock team building in which all team members were tie with each other from legs and they have to walk through ring without any fall. We select this team activity to play because it shows automatically the dependency of one team member upon another co-worker. If one person does[A1] any mistake it will affect the whole team. OUTCOMES The major outcome of this activity was building trust on each other and working by co-operation. It shows that all group members are different from each other, their learning style are different, different personalities and traits are there, but this activity ensure that all team member can achieve any task with trust and co-operation, it must be productive as much as possible. Group activity convey a message of internalize as well as it increases team bonding. The main motto of this game was to appreciate of a team member in his/her achievement or strengths and help in weakness. It substitutes possibility thinking on the place of limited beliefs which relieve stress and increase talent of life balance. According to Switzler A (2009) some more things will need to be done on schedule. SCHEDUAL REGULAR TIME TO COMMUNICATE When poor communication occurs in any group or team there must be a written report of problem, its consequences and possible solutions. There will be a weekly or fortnightly meeting to discuss all the problem and their solutions. IDENTIFY AND SHARE BEHAVIOUR PATTERN The second main thing to do is to read team members behaviour. Behaviours to be identify are working, not working as well as missing behaviours. Involvement of team leader in every task is must. Obtaining data by survey Survey should also be involved in weekly meetings. It will help to collect sufficient and correct data to discuss with the group members and will helpful to make the solutions for major issues. GARNER SUPPORT BY TALKING YOUR COLLEAGUES The main role of team leader in this task is to solve a problem according to the situation. Never take any action if a single person complaining about another person in the team, first think about the situation and then take any action. But, if there any problem occur to your group you must have to attend it. If the same problem exists with similar frustration, then make a planned solution according to problem. OUR TEAM LEARNING STYLES AND PERSONALITY Team is a group of people who always work together with co-operation and co-ordination. All members are very punctual all came on time but that day Harsimranjit got late because his train was cancelled. All team members great at their tasks and participated in every activity enthusiastically. 26th February all met at Jaspreets home, for preparing the slides and to do some role play activity preparation. In every task, Jaspreet and Randeeps role was related to Hersey Blanchard Theory. They follow all the instruction given by the group leader and done their work at a great level. FRANKENSTEIN In the story â€Å"Frankenstein,† written by the author Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein decided that wanted to create a being out of people that were already dead. He believed that he could bring people back from the grave. Playing with nature in such a way would make him play the role of God. With Victor Frankenstein feeling that he had no true friends, the only relief he had of expressing his feeling was through letters to Elizabeth. Elizabeth was not Victors’ true sister but he loved her very dearly, making sure to always write her when ever he had the chance. Yet, when Victor left something strange came over him. Already being interested in subjects such as natural philosophy and chemistry, he fall upon the question of how to bring someone back to life. He became very involved in this project and worked on it for days on end. The project had to do with defying the laws of nature. Victor believe wholeheartedly that he could bring the dead back to life. He felt that the dead were not ready to die and they were just resting. Victor became so self absorbed into his project that he seem to forget all that was important to him. He even disengaged himself from all the people he loved in his life. People like his father, Elizabeth, and other loved ones. Victor began to write less and less. Yet, it was not until Elizabeth got a discouraged letter from Victor, did his love ones start to wary about him. Though, the letter was full of words, it gave no relief ...

Formulas Given on the SAT, Explained This is exactly what you'll see at the beginning of both math sections (the calculator and no calculator section). It can be easy to look right past it, so familiarize yourself with the formulas now to avoid wasting time on test day. You are given 12 formulas on the test itself and three geometry laws. It can be helpful and save you time and effort to memorize the given formulas, but it is ultimately unnecessary, as they are given on every SAT math section. The distance will be the hypotenuse, which you can find via the Pythagorean Theorem. Circles Good to Know Length of an arc Given a radius and a degree measure of an arc from the center, find the length of the arc Use the formula for the circumference multiplied by the angle of the arc divided by the total angle measure of the circle (360) $$L_{\arc} = (2Ï€r)({\degree \measure \center \of \arc}/360)$$ E.g., A 60 degree arc is $1/6$ of the total circumference because $60/360 = 1/6$ Area of an arc sector Given a radius and a degree measure of an arc from the center, find the area of the arc sector Use the formula for the area multiplied by the angle of the arc divided by the total angle measure of the circle $$A_{\arc \sector} = (Ï€r^2)({\degree \measure \center \of \arc}/360)$$ An alternative to memorizing the â€Å"formula† is just to stop and think about arc circumferences and arc areas logically. You know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle (because they are in your given equation box on the test). You know how many degrees are in a circle (because it is in your given equation box on the text). Now put the two together: If the arc spans 90 degrees of the circle, it must be $1/4$th the total area/circumference of the circle because $360/90 = 4$. If the arc is at a 45 degree angle, then it is $1/8$th the circle, because $360/45 = 8$. The concept is exactly the same as the formula, but it may help you to think of it this way instead of as a â€Å"formula† to memorize. Algebra Need to Know Quadratic equation Given a polynomial in the form of $ax^2+bx+c$, solve for x. $$x={-b ±Ã¢Ë†Å¡{b^2-4ac}}/{2a}$$ Simply plug the numbers in and solve for x! Some of the polynomials you'll come across on the SAT are easy to factor (e.g. $x^2+3x+2$, $4x^2-1$, $x^2-5x+6$, etc), but some of them will be more difficult to factor and be near-impossible to get with simple trial-and-error mental math. In these cases, the quadratic equation is your friend. Make sure you don't forget to do two different equations for each polynomial: one that's $x={-b+√{b^2-4ac}}/{2a}$ and one that's $x={-b-√{b^2-4ac}}/{2a}$. Note: If you know how to complete the square, then you don't need to memorize the quadratic equation. However, if you're not completely comfortable with completing the square, then it's relatively easy to memorize the quadratic formula and have it ready. I recommend memorizing it to the tune of either "Pop Goes the Weasel" or "Row, Row, Row Your Boat". Averages Need to Know The average is the same thing as the mean Find the average/mean of a set of numbers/terms $$\Mean = {\sum \of \the \terms}/{\number \of \different \terms}$$ Find the average speed $$\Speed = {\total \distance}/{\total \time}$$ Probabilities Need to Know Probability is a representation of the odds of something happening. $$\text"Probability of an outcome" = {\text"number of desired outcomes"}/{\text"total number of possible outcomes"}$$ Good to Know A probability of 1 is guaranteed to happen. A probability of 0 will never happen. Percentages Need to Know Find x percent of a given number n. $$n(x/100)$$ Find out what percent a number n is of another number m. $$(n100)/m$$ Find out what number n is x percent of. $$(n100)/x$$ Trigonometry Trigonometry is a new addition to the new 2016 SAT math section. Though it makes up less than 5% of math questions, you won't be able to answer the trigonometry questions without knowing the following formulas. Need to Know Find the sine of an angle given the measures of the sides of the triangle. $sin(x)$= Measure of the opposite side to the angle / Measure of the hypotenuse In the figure above, the sine of the labeled angle would be $a/h$. Find the cosine of an angle given the measures of the sides of the triangle. $cos(x)$= Measure of the adjacent side to the angle / Measure of the hypotenuse In the figure above, the cosine of the labeled angle would be $b/h$. Find the tangent of an angle given the measures of the sides of the triangle. $tan(x)$= Measure of the opposite side to the angle / Measure of the adjacent side to the angle In the figure above, the tangent of the labeled angle would be $a/b$. A helpful memory trick is an acronym: SOHCAHTOA. Sine equals Opposite over Hypotenuse Cosine equals Adjacent over Hypotenuse Tangent equals Opposite over Adjacent SAT Math: Beyond the Formulas Though these are all the formulas you’ll need (the ones you’re given as well as the ones you need to memorize), this list doesn't cover every aspect of SAT Math.You’ll also need to understand how to factor equations, how to manipulate and solve for absolute values, and how to manipulate and use exponents, and much more. These topics are all covered here. Another important thing to remember is that while memorizing the formulas in this article that aren't given to you on the test is important, knowing this list of formulas doesn't mean you're all set for SAT Math. You also need to practice applying these formulas to answer questions, so that you know when it makes sense to use them. For instance, if you're asked to calculate how likely it is that a white marble would be drawn from a jar that contains three white marbles and four black marbles, it's easy enough to realize you need to take this probability formula: $$\text"Probability of an outcome" = {\text"number of desired outcomes"}/{\text"total number of possible outcomes"}$$ and use it to find the answer: $\text"Probability of a white marble" = {\text"number of white marbles"}/{\text"total number of marbles"}$ $\text"Probability of a white marble" = 3/7$ On the SAT math section, however, you will also run into more complex probability questions like this one: Dreams Recalled During One Week None 1 to 4 5 or more Total Group X 15 28 57 100 Group Y 21 11 68 100 Total 36 39 125 200 The data in the table above were produced by a sleep researcher studying the number of dreams people recall when asked to record their dreams for one week. Group X consisted of 100 people who observed early bedtimes, and Group Y consisted of 100 people who observed later bedtimes. If a person is chosen at random from those who recalled at least 1 dream, what is the probability that the person belonged to Group Y? A) $68/100$ B) $79/100$ C) $79/164$ D) $164/200$ There's a lot of information to synthesize in that question: a table of data, a two-sentence long explanation of the table, and then, finally, what you need to solve for. If you haven't practiced these kinds of problems, you won't necessarily realize that you'll need that probability formula you memorized, and it might take you a few minutes of fumbling through the table and racking your brain to figure out how to get the answer- minutes that you now can't use on other problems in the section or to check your work. If you have practiced these kinds of questions, however, you'll be able to quickly and effectively deploy that memorized probability formula and solve the problem: This is a probability question, so I'll probably (ha) need to use this formula: $$\text"Probability of an outcome" = {\text"number of desired outcomes"}/{\text"total number of possible outcomes"}$$ OK, so the number of desired outcomes is anyone in Group Y who remembered at least one dream. That's these bolded cells: None 1 to 4 5 or more Total Group X 15 28 57 100 Group Y 21 11 68 100 Total 36 39 125 200 And then the total number of possible outcomes is all people who recalled at least one dream. To get that, I have to subtract the number of people who didn't recall at least one dream (36) from the total number of people (200). Now I'll plug it all back into the equation: $\text"Probability of an outcome" = {11+68}/{200-36}$ $\text"Probability of an outcome" = {79}/{164}$ The correct answer is C) $79/164$ The takeaway from this example: once you've memorized these SAT math formulas, you need to learn when and how to use them by drilling yourself on practice questions.
